Q: chicago car seat laws & taxis?
can someone tell me definitively, whether or not i need a car seat for my 1 year old in a taxi? we are traveling to chicago next week & plan on taking taxis all over town. oddly enough i can’t seem to find the answer online.

A: It’s certainly legal by the link pp mentioned but i’d like to remind you that just because a taxi is *exempt* doesn’t mean that it suddenly has a giant protective bubble around it. Its still a car just like any other car on the road….riding with your child unrestrained could get them killed. do you really want to take that chance? I’ve riden in a taxi once in my life…and ironically that one time i was in an accident….we were t-boned in an intersection….i can’t imagine a child having walked away uninjured from that if not in a restraint.
Just something to think about.

Q: My car was stolen on 12/22 in Chicago. How long for the insurance to process my claim?
I already filed my claim and all paperwork. How long before Im back to normal?

A: most insurance companies won’t payout on stolen cars for 30 days. if a vehicle is not recovered during those 1st 30 days, the likelihood it will ever be recovered drops off quite dramatically.

Q: Since it has gotten cold (in Chicago) I have to rev my car really high before it will move. Any ideas?
Since the winter has really set in my 1997 Ford Escort does not seem to want to go anywhere. I have to rev the engine all the way up till it almost red-lines before it will even budge. It is worse right when I turn the car on and after about 40 minutes of driving it eventually gets better. I think there might be something wrong with the transmission, maybe?

A: check your transmission filter…it may be clogged and not letting enough fluid thru until you rev the engine…replace filter and fluid and you should be ok…if this doesnt work…the torque converter is bad

A: NO WHERE, you should consider looking at a junk yard. The price of metal is way up. A car will bring around $500 just for scrap metal.

My grandmother recently passed away and my family now lives in Idaho. My grandfather would like to come visit us, but we don’t know which way would be better for him to get here. One of us can fly to Illinois to meet him and fly back, or drive out and pick him up. Which do you think would be easier on a 97 year old?

A: If he, and somebody in your family has time, go pick him up and drive him. That way you can stop when he needs to ease out possible pain in his back or knees, stop for toilet stops and food when he needs it, and he doesn’t have to put up with the stress of Chicago airports.

A: Don’t tell any prospective buyers that you need to sell it fast — they’ll lowball you. Just sell it for whatever you can get and pay the bank, get title, sign it over.

Q: Can the City of Chicago suspend the license or boot the car of a Michigan resident?
I received a vehicle seizure notice today. I’m going to pay it, I just haven’t had the money.
I live in Michigan, I got the ticket when I visited the city. I rarely, if ever, go to Chicago, or Illinois for that matter. Can they boot my car?

A: Absolutely they can seize your vehicle. This is most often done by installing a Denver Boot on the car. After 24 hours, if payment is still not received, the vehicle is often towed to the impound lot.

During this whole process, you will still owe the money for all the tickets, plus a boot installation charge, a boot removal charge, towing fees, administrative fees, storage fees, etc. Then you’ll have no way to get to work unless you pay for a ride somehow which will further increase your financial problems.

I can tell you for a fact that a vehicle seizure notice is not a warning. It is actually a statement that indicates that your car will be “seized” on sight. And the department does have people that go around looking for those vehicles.

I strongly suggest that you contact the people on that letter and arrange for a payment plan before you end up in the situation I just described.

A: If the Cleveland Convention Center would allow you to leave your car overnight, at $8, it might be your cheapest option.

A: don’t know where you’re going in Canada but from South Bend IN [ Notre Dame ] to Windsor Ontario Canada [ just across the river from Detroit] Greyhound cost 50 bucks and takes about 6.5 hrs
Amtrak can get you to Niagara Falls ON CA for about 90 bucks -basically the same price per mile as greyhound and much faster.

Q: Can I rent a car in Chicago if I’m only 21?
This will be my first time renting a car on my own. I’ll be in Chicago for a job interview and I was wondering if I can rent a car if I’m only 21. And I have also been told I NEED a credit card to do so. I only have a debit card… Will that work?

A: They charge more if you are under 25 & they make you buy extra insurance. On top of that they put a hold of $500.00 through out the rental in case of any minor damage. So the question is do you have enough in your account to cover the additional charges and have some left for meals & lodging??

Q: Is it possible to recycle in Chicago if you don’t have a car?
I read about the blue cart program they’re planning to roll out but my neighborhood isn’t scheduled for a while. I’m not interested in drop off, I don’t drive.
