Q: How do you become a cab driver in Chicago?
How do you start the process of becoming a Chicago “city” cab driver? If there any experienced drivers that read this, can you tell me about how much would it take to start? Including, car lease, training, gas, etc. Know any good companies? I’m really looking to break into the business, and any useful information would be great.
And PLEASE no Cab driver jokes!!!
A: First you need a special license to drive a taxi, then you have to contact a company to lease a cab. Here are some suggestions, http://www.yellowcabchicago.com/aboutyellowcab.php, or http://www.chicagocarriagecab.com/special.asp Hope that helps.
Q: What are the best sights to see in Chicago if I have just one day?
I will be in Chicago to attend a seminar this weekend. I’ll arrive on Thursday evening and will have Friday to explore. I’ve been there before, seen the Sears Tower, the Shedd Aquarium, and the Museum of Science & Industry. That probably indicates the sorts of things I find interesting.
I’ll be staying in Oak Brook, but have a car (and, of course, there is public transport).
Suggestions for what to see and do this Friday?
Thanks.
A: if you are lucky try to make it to shaumburg for midieval times. it is the place they went on the cable guy were they are knights and have jousting. or if you want to stay in chicago see the metropolitan art museum. i could stay there for a full day.
Q: Do you know of a meeting place off of interstate 90 around Chicago?
I live in Chicago w/o a car. My dad is a truck driver (he just started) he is going to be traveling through Chicago on a trip from Minneapolis to Columbus, OH on interstate 90. Where is a good place for us to meet up. (Keep in mind it has to be easy for him to park a massive truck and somewhat close to an L stop).
A: Another good meeting place is Bennigan’s right off of Cumberland and the I90. Take the Blue line to Cumberland. When you get off the trains go up the stairs and out. Turn left and keep walking (upper platform) and down the stairs. Bennigan’s is right there. Lots of parking lots and I have seen trucks going in there. I live nearby. Good luck.
Q: Will my 1998 Honda Civic be able to survive a trip from San Diego to Chicago?
I’m planning a road trip from San Diego to Chicago with my 1998 Honda. It has about 88,000 miles and still runs great, but I’m not sure it will make it that far without having complications. Any suggestions, answers, advise? Has anyone attempted this with an older car?
A: I agree with all the above answers. I will add my two cents. If you don’t know how to figure gas millage learn, this way you will always know how long you can drive before stopping for gas. Put one gallon of fuel in the trunk, put a gallon or 2 of coolant in the trunk, put basic hand tools, jumper cables, duct tape and maps in the trunk. Put a couple of quarts of oil in the trunk. Pull a mile or two off the highway for the best gas prices. You can get a basic AAA card for about 60 bucks, if you break down you will be glad you have it. I used to make the trip with a CB radio. Good for finding “bear traps” and conditions ahead. If you hit snow don’t continue, you are a rookie, its dangerous. Wish I could join you. Good luck.
Q: Does anyone know of a good place in Chicago to throw a kids birthday party?
My nephew is turning 2 this November and I am looking for a place to have his birthday. Anything is fine but if something has to do with race cars or firetrucks that would be our number one.
A: Chuck E. Cheese.
Q: Who knows the songs that are played during the Chicago White Sox Fireworks Nights?
I know that they play life is a highway and chasing cars, but does anyone know the others. i was there last night, and i completely forgot the other ones!! Thanks!
A: eh
*shrug*
I don’t like sports
Q: What are some of the better place for a University of Illinois Chicago student live?
I plan on attending UIC next year and I was wondering what some of the more convenient areas of Chicago to live in. As a student I am on a budget, and am looking for a less pricey area. I plan on selling my car before moving, so I will need to be near public transportation. Also, I would like to be near fresh groceries and decent entertainment (I’m not yet 21). Any help would be much appreciated!
A: A lot of students live in the area between the campuses. The area is not too pricey and are you near public transportation (Blue line and several bus lines. The local supermarkets are Dominick’s at Halsted and Madison, Canal and Roosevelt, and Damen and Chicago (convenient from the west campus). There are Jewel’s at Roosevelt and Paulina (campus shuttle stops across the street) and State and Roosevelt. I lived on the west campus, and for groceries I went to the Jewel at Paulina and Roosevelt or the Dominick’s at Chicago and Damen. There are a number of bars on Taylor St. and University Village. You can easily access downtown.
Q: How long does it take to get from an outlying area of Chicago to downtown on the ‘L’?
I will be moving to an outlying neighborhood of Chicago such as Jefferson Park. How long does it take to travel to the major business districts downtown from there? Would it take significantly longer during peak periods/rush hour than it would at off-peak times?
Also, if you have any idea how long it would take to make the same trip in a car, please toss in that information too!
Thanks!!
A: It’s about 40 minutes to the middle of the Loop from Jefferson Park on the Blue Line. If anything, it’s a bit faster during peak periods since there are more trains. A car will only take about 20 minutes – but that’s if it’s not rush hour. During rush hour, you’ll pass cars sitting at a standstill in traffic for over an hour while zipping past on the L.
Q: Parking at the Chicago Hyatt Regency is $48 a day. Is there nearby overnight parking that is a lot cheaper?
My girlfriend and I are planning a weekend in Chicago from Iowa and if we end up driving we’d probably leave the car in a spot from Friday night to Sunday afternoon.
A: Welcome to downtown Chicago. Where the cost to park your car is like getting another room.
This is one of the reasons that many industry conferences and trade shows are moving away from Chicago, and onto Orlando and Las Vegas.
Anyway – there is a private surface lot next to the Hyatt, at 111 E. Wacker Drive. It is run by System Parking – that locations number is (according to their website) 312 296-0698.
http://spmty.systemparking.net/spmtyv10/location/location.aspx
You can call to see what their rates are, but they probably will not be much less than the Hyatt’s. I see that the Hyatt website also gives a suggestion for self park, (Monroe Street Parking) but they say it is 5 blocks away. Keep in mind that 5 blocks in the city of Chicago is a long way.
That Hyatt is right on the river, so parking is really at a premium.
The Hyatt may be the “safest” – since it is valet and will be monitored.
Good Luck – enjoy the Windy City.
Q: How do you register to become a Chicago Police officer?
I’m doing a project and I will get in F in this class if I don’t do it. So some questions I have are…………..
How do you register as a Chicago Fireman?
How much do you get paid yearly when you first start?
What are some costs of foods from going shopping every 2 weeks?
What is a good type of car to start with?
Year?
Type?
Mileage?
and why do you need two checking accounts?
A: Here’s how to become a cop: http://egov.cityofchicago.org/city/webportal/portalContentItemAction.do?BV_SessionID=@@@@1941503503.1210605606@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccceadeedjdglddcefecelldffhdffn.0&contentOID=536884045&contenTypeName=COC_EDITORIAL&topChannelName=Dept&blockName=Police%2FI+Want+To&context=dept&channelId=0&programId=0&entityName=Police&deptMainCategoryOID=
I can’t find the specific info to apply as a firefighter, but you can also attend the police and fire academy: http://www.cpfta.com/
According to WBBM-radio, starting salary for firefighters is about $45,000 (http://www.wbbm780.com/pages/39609.php?). According to Wikipedia, starting salary for police officers is about $43,000, but you can’t always trust Wikipedia.
If you’re a single person, you can probably get by with about $50 a week for food.
As for a car, with gas prices the way they are, a small car is proably the best. Maybe even a hybrid.
Year? Whatever you can afford.
Not sure what you mean by two checking accounts. Who is asking for that?
Q: What are the expenses of living in Chicago?
I plan on moving to Chicago /after/ college. I’m in my senior year of high school now, so it’ll be in, roughly, six years. I want to live in a good neighborhood and I’ve heard Edgewater is nice. I don’t plan on having a car, so that’ll cut down on gas expenses. I don’t plan on eating fast food a lot, and I’ll be living by myself. Mostly likely, I’ll have no pets in the first few years.
Can someone tell me what it’ll cost, on average?
A: Today I would tell you to expect to pay at least $750 a month on an apartment within walking distance to public transportation in a halfway nice neighborhood like Edgewater. That doesn’t include the security deposit you’re going to have to put down which is usually a month’s rent.
A monthly pass for unlimited rides on CTA trains and buses will cost you $75 per month ($2.50 per day). Which is pretty cheap but you should expect the CTA fares to go up at least a quarter in the next six years.
After that you have to budget for food (eating in & out), utilities (usually just electric & gas), entertainment (movies, bars…), savings, and you’re naturally going to have to at some point spend money on new clothes/shoes…
Basically your total cost of rent shouldn’t cost more than half of what you make every month if you ask me.
Q: How do I know what streets in Chicago require a parking sticker?
My friend lives on W cornelia and says that nobody has stickers on their cars that park on the street….but he just moved there so im not sure and i dont want to park on the street and get a ticket or tow!!!!
A: I don’t know of any streets that require parking stickers, unless it’s posted zone parking. This is usually on residential streets. Just check the signs.
Q: Can DePaul freshman bring cars to campus?
I am coming to DePaul University (Chicago, IL) in the fall and I will be an out-of state student, and I was wondering if anyone could tell me whether I’ll be able to bring my car?
A: yes. u can. parking is tight
Q: How far is it from Chicago to the Chicago Botanic Gardens in Glencoe?
I want to take the bike trail from Devon Ave in Chicago to The Botanic Gardens in Glencoe… But I want to know how far it is first, because while I like to bike, a die hard bicyclist I am not. So, even if you’ve only ever rode in a car, I’m just looking for a milage estimate…
A: 15 miles sounds about right.
I biked that trail a couple of times, but it’s been over 10 yrs since the last time. It’s relatively flat. The only elevations are for the overpasses. Be aware that, early on, there are street-level crossings.
Otherwise, enjoy the ride.
Q: How much does a 108 mile Taxi ride cost in Chicago?
Do cabs go that far? Because i need to go from chicago airport to a tiny town around 108 miles away and i can’t drive or rent a car. How much would it cost approximately if they even travel that far?
A: Probably more than your flight. You might contact Greyhound and see if they provide transportation to that area.
