Q: 1990 Buick Century, car will break down at certain times. Any ideas?
Older car (1990 Buick Century – 6cyl automatic) with about 113000 miles on it. Thermostat may be busted because it barely gets any heat…. The car was fine until getting back from a trip from Chicago to New York City and back (1600mi)… The car would rarely break down when idling (about 3 times a month in the cold)… Now I cannot get the car to start unless I put it in neutral and give it some gas while turning the key. While driving, the car will break down if I come to complete stops so I have to shift to neutral and hold the gas down at stop lights and such… It is also having trouble shifting its gears on sharp turns so it puts & sputters like it is trying to break down, almost as if I wasn’t giving it any gas to begin with. What could the problem(s) be?

A: You might need to check your fuel filter and/or fuel pump. There are several things that can cause this, but check the obvious first. Also, check the air cleaner for restrictions and a dirty filter.

Q: Buying a car from Craigslist?
http://chicago.craigslist.org/chc/car/535827265.html

honda civic si, 2007, 6900 miles. for an AMAZING $4399. But the seller lives in UK, and the car is in New York, he says he will ship for free and let me “test drive” for 10 days. still waiting for response if he has a carfax report or not.
should i trust him?

and on the other hand, does anyone have a carfax account?
Adam D, the link still works for me…I haven’t bought it yet, I’m still communicating with the seller.

Yes I realize it’s sort of fishy, but this car is in perfect condition, and it sort of makes sense why he’s selling it for so cheap, seeing that he lives int he UK, no more use for it anymore.

So no one has a Carfax account?
so you guys are right, the listing has been removed…i don’t know maybe he’ll e-mail me back soon and let’s see what he says…

A: SCAM SCAM SCAM SCAM.

You don’t buy a car from anyone you can’t meet in person, unless you’re willing to lose every cent.

And if the price is AMAZINGLY low, it is almost definitely a scam. If the seller lives overseas, it is almost definitely a scam.

Both? Absolutely 100% certain it is a scam.

And for 30 bucks you can have a carfax account. You ought to be looking at so many cars that it would be impractical to go begging for checks from people on the internet, you should just get one yourself.

The link still works for you because it is in your ISP’s, or your browser’s cache. ctrl-click on the link and it won’t work.

If you live overseas and are trying to sell a car, you get a friend or relative to sell it for you. The potential for scams and/or theft is too high to do it any other way.

Q: Driving from Chicago to San Diego. Which route will put the least stress on my older car?
So I am moving out to San Diego for a new job. I am taking my old 94 blazer, and want to go as easy as possible on it, so I am wondering which route I should take.

It’s basically between going through Colorado and Utah or going further south through Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. I’m not too familiar with the landscape, but I would figure that the southern route has more deserts, where as the northern way has more mountains (which could be rough on my transmission).

Also, is it better to drive the desert during the day, or at night since it gets so much cooler?

A: 55 South to the 44 South to the 40 West.

Q: Parking for a week in New York?
I’m driving from Chicago to New York for a week at the end of March and I was wondering if any parking garages would give me a week of parking at a discount for, say 90$? Anywhere in the city is fine, I just dont want to spend over $120 for 1 week of parking. I don;t need to take my car out each day as I will be taking the subway everywhere.

Also does anyone know how I would going about finding a week of parking in advance or how I would get a deal once I am in the city? Thanks.

A: You can try,could help.

Q: Where can I legally blow up a car?
I liked seeing those explosions in movies, especially those exploding cars in those action movies, inbcluding that new movie “The Marine” and I wanna try that same exploding excitement myself.

I live around the Chicago area and I really wanna do this and camcord the whole thing.

1) Where is the US can I do this where it’s perfectly legal?

2) What’s the best possible way to blow it up skyhigh with the biggest explosion possible? (excluding A-bombs and H-bombs, of course)

A: Unless you are a certified and licensed Demolitions Technician – you cannot.

Q: help me surprize trip to chicago..?
my hubby just got a big promotion and he has to go to chicago for training for a week and me and ou 2 yr old lil girl is going.. i have clearance to drive the company car while he is in training during the day.. so beside the hotel having a water park in it.. what else can i get into that is very kid friendly and doesnt cost a arm and leg because i’m saving for a disney trip in Oct.. so i dont have alot of blow money..

i seen they have beaches are they nice?

also since the city is so large one of the largest i have ever been too… is there any hints on where NOT to go because of bad neighborhoods..

we found out 2 days ago that we have to be there tomorrow at noon and be there til noon friday so this is all very exciting! he got his company car a new ford fusion and a gas card that i’m super excited about because we dont have to pay for gas for him to go back and forth to work!!! which right now is the most important perk of them all!!.. any advice guys on what to do?
thanks, were coming from no wheres Kentucky so… this is a big deal for me…LOL and i have a garmin.. so as long as i have the address i can get there!

A: I’d recommend Millenium Park and the surrounding area at Washington and Michigan Avenue. There’s a fun sculpture / water fountain that kids play in there – bring a swimsuit for your little girl – and you’re right by Michigan Avenue’s shopping (or browsing) and Oak Street Beach, one of the nicest beaches along the lake.

Nearby is the John Hancock Building (Michigan and Delaware), and you can go up to the 96th floor and enjoy the incredible view for free – it’s a bar, but you can have some water or a light snack at lunchtime.

Another great beach, North Avenue Beach, is a bit further north along Lake Shore Drive – and you’d probably enjoy cruising Lake Shore Drive – at the North Avenue exit – you’ll see lots of volleyball nets, that’s where to go.

And if you go a little further north of that, at Fullerton Avenue, you’ll see signs for the beautiful Lincoln Park Zoo – which is completely free, you can just wander in, and it’s extremely kid-friendly. I highly, highly recommend the zoo.

As for bad neighborhoods, don’t worry about it – unless you’re venturing very far south of downtown or very far west – and it’s unlikely you’d do that – you won’t be in bad areas. Stick to downtown, around Michigan Avenue and Lincoln Park, and you’ll see the main sites and have lots of fun.

Q: which car is better on the road?
Ok i am just wondering which car would drive/race well in chicago.(quote on just wondering) A 1983 Thunderbird with a mustang engine/the rest stock. or a 1993 mitsubishi mirage LS with a new engine, suspension, tires, brakes. This maybe common sense but my friends say that the thunderbird would win the race.

A: http://www.dragtimes.com/Ford-Thunderbird-Timeslip-4522.html

http://www.fordmotorforum.com/pit-stop/5019-stock-1-4-mile-ets-0-a.html

Although both cars are far from the cream of the crop to be made into fast cars but…here we go.

You are comparing two different classes of vehicles if you decided to make these fast cars. First, the T Bird has a 5.0 Liter motor, standard suspension and probably a heavier car.

The Mirage will have the weight advantage. It will be lightweight, easier to maneuver and as we all know…..tuners can make alot of R’s if you know what I mean. Add a little nitrous and you will be waving goodbye to the Tbird in your rear view mirror.

I would strongly suggest switching to something a little more upbeat and that has some horsepower. How about a chevy product with a vette motor in it ??? The new Camaro??? Dodge Challenger??? Dodge SRT10??

I would chose the mirage.

Those little cars can make some impressive numbers.
Good luck with your street racing!

Q: Car Insurance / Flood Questions?
2 Weeks ago my area was completely flooded (Albany park, Chicago), and my car was parked on the side of the road near the flooding.

I didnt actually see the car in any water because we evacuated. When we came back the following tuesday, the car started fine, i let it run for about 30 seconds, then shut it off. I figured we were ok, since there were no visable signs of flooding on the interior, and the car started.

We dont use the car that much, it’s our 3rd vehicle, but my wife went to take it to school the following saturday morning and it wouldnt start…it cranked, but did not turn over…

I popped the hood and removed the spark plug caps, there was water in the spark plug caps and the spark plugs were visibly corroded. I would have changed them except Ford buries the spark plugs on the underside of the engine and it would have been an all day project.

I didnt know what else would have been affected by flood water, so i called in a claim to my insurance company.

The garage called back today and said a representative from the insurance company came by to look at the car, and said that i needed a new fuel pump and a tune-up, and that they arent going to cover the claim because the damage is inconsistent with flooding.

My question is, would there be any way for water to get inside the fuel pump either from 3 days of heavy rain, or by being submerged in flood water? And if so, wouldnt that constitute “flood damage”??

A: ‘Ford buries the spark plugs on the underside of the engine’ is not a fair statement although I accept that they do you no favors when it comes to access. On any production Ford the spark plugs are well above the height of the vehicle floor pan and seating. If the car started there was clearly no water ingress into the engine. Unless water had reached vents in the fuel system which are normally at filler cap height there is no way flood water could damage the fuel pump. Condensation from damp situations may well have caused external signs of corrosion in plug caps but you could not say that the flooding was the definitive reason. If the carpets smell and are moldy the car was in flood water but brake rotors would also be corroded and there would be clear evidence the car was sitting in water. If your car does not show all these signs of being in water your insurance will not pay out.

Q: Will you get pulled over for not having a city sticker?
My wife and I bought a new car and we want to wait until july to get the city sticker.
I know that you can get a parking ticket if you dont have the city sticker but will the authorities pull you over if they see that you do not have the sticker.
city : Chicago State:IL

A: City sticker means registration which means a potential for being pulled over.

Q: New Driver, is driving on the highway hard? i think i might be scared of it :( ?
I got my license and i’m going to chicago and renting a car. I’m scared of the highway , should i be ?

what’s the best way to overcome highway fear ?

A: I think it’s easier to drive on Highways. It can get boring though so be sure to stay alert. It’s a very good idea to stop at least every 2 hours and walk around a little, like around your car. Also watch out for other vehicles getting into your blind spot which is usually to your side and right behind. For some reason, some people like to drive there. I’ve sped up and slowed down and they would stay in the blind spot. Just be sure to turn your head and look after you have given a signal before any lane changes.

Q: i’ve never been this upset … i wrecked her car and they dont know yet … im crying, please help :( ?
Okay a few weeks ago I had turned 15 and i got my drivers permit. My dad had said before that I’m a better driver then him because i had been driving in his lap since I was a little kid. And Ive been driving with my parents in the car since I was around 13 and never got in a wreck or anything at all.

Anyway my grandma had come about two days ago and had left her car here because she was going out of town with a friend to a wedding. She had always let my drive with her in the car too. She trusted me.

Anyway I get home a bit earlier then my parents because i have a free period at the end of the day. So I walk home (its about 3 blocks). Today I really needed to go to the store to buy some things because Friday is prom. So I thought it would be ok if i just slipped out and got it and then came back real quick. I found my grandmas keys and i had took her car (a new Buick, really expensive). Everything was going great i even stopped by a friends house. On the way home though I was at a intersection and in the right lane there was a an 18 wheeler turning right so i didnt see that there was a pickup in the left lane!

i had pulled out and the truck had SLAMMED the breaks. So it slided to a stop and hit the back door and dented it HORRIBLE. i fishtailed and then i had sat in the middle of the intersection and i had got out of the car. but then the pickup driver had just kept driving, didnt even stop to see if i was OK!!!

anyway i wanted to something but god im so ashamed idk what to do. the back door is almost caved in! i just drove home no one even cared b/c i live in chicago and this happens every day. but the entire back of the car is just destroyed almost.

i hate myself! i wish i had been killed. there are tears all over the keyboard, i just dont know what do and my parents wont be home until 6:30 or so (its 4:16 here). sorry but im posting this in a busy section because i need answers NOW. can i take the car somewhere to get fixed real quick before my parents see it?? how much will it cost? i have money and i can pay for all of it.

:(

A: If this is even for real don’t bother trying to get it fixed. The cost would be at least a thousand dollars plus and no one would deal with a 15 y/o child. Why cry, its done. You made a bad choice so now be grown up and take the punishment.

A: I think you better just fess up and admit that you made a mistake and also say you are willing to pay for it. It really will be okay. No one got hurt, everyone is safe…and we’re talking about a car. Call your parents and tell them – it’s better to let them know what happened before they get surprised. You cannot fix it today, but you can fix it. Take some deep breaths…all will be fine – it’s called an accident for a reason – it was an accident – it happens. I bet it’s happened to your parents, too. Just try to calm down and call your parents. I’m sure when they see how badly you feel, they will be fine.

A: Honey, there’s no way that a car can be fixed in a couple of hours. If you haven’t done so already, you need to call the police and report the accident, then call your parents and let them know. They need to contact your grandmother and her insurance company so that they can get everything started on the repair process.

I know this is hard for you to deal with, but you are just going to have to accept responsibility for the accident and be prepared to own up to your mistake. And please, don’t EVER wish that you had been killed. A car can be fixed or replaced, but your life is too precious and can never be given back once it’s gone.

I’ll pray for you, that your parents and grandmother understand that it was a mistake on your part to do what you did.
