Q: Moving a lease to Chicago?
My husband and I are moving to Chicago at the end of June. Our lease on our current car is up, so we need to go ahead and lease a new one. With all the nonsense surrounding taxes on registering cars in Illinois, we don’t know what the best course of action is. Should we lease a car here, and if so, will we pay taxes twice (to CA now and to IL when we register there)? Or should we find a way to wait and lease a car once we’re in Illinois? Or will Illinois screw us equally either way?

A: That taxes have to be paid in Illinois, period. Talk to the leasing company. If you lease from a company that is licenced to lease in both states, you will pay CA taxes up to the date you transfer, then Illinois taxes. If you lease from a company that is not licenced to lease in both, you will have all kinds of problems, possibly even been told you can’t take the car when you move, or the leasing company taking the taxes for CA, and Illinois collecting as well. As a broker and registrations agent, I registered many out-of-province leases, and for the most part the companies were licenced by our tax department, but it got messy if somebody had a lease from some small local company in their previous jurisdiction.

If the vehicle you want cannot be leased from a national leasing company, wait to get to Chicago, it will save a world of problems. If the lease is from somebody like Ford Credit, Chrysler Credit, etc, there is not likely to be a problem.

Q: Do you believe that Chicago is the most stressful city?
According to Forbes magazine, it is and it is ahead of New York. I have lived in Chicago for 3 years. From my experience some of the things the author said might be true, but he is missing out a lot of points that makes the city less stressful.
here is what I think
Stressful factors:
-people – only small part of people are nice actually. Most people I encountered were rude and unfriendly, especially in young 20s.
- roads, many roads are narrow, old and cracked.
- half of chicago drivers are insane, they will drive very close to your back. some of them bypass in front of you and then slams brake down!
- unless you go to bars with your friends, chances are you will not make new friends at bars when talking to them.
- national chain foods everywhere, very few independent restaurant, for ex, nice lincoln park area is filled with starbucks at everycorner!
- cta trains are slow, but slowly CTA is fixing slow zones
Good sides of Chicago:
- Nice beach and lake
- Altough roads, higways are old, narrow, they are clean
- Gold Coast area is beautiful and there is a plenty of things to do there
- commuting is easy, you do not rely just on car, cta railway cars just got noticeably cleaner
- good schools such as Nortwestern, Loyola, DePaul

What do you think?

A: I was born and raised here…many out-of-towners that we entertain say the same things you said, clean town! Our aldermen bring the street cleaners out every week most times. I see them everyday downtown. We have several machines for the sand and lake as well. Downtown is a fun place to work, even if you live in the burbs, you love the fact you can catch up on things if you do the train commute to work.

WORK is stressful in Chicago!! Be careful when you receive a salaried job!!!! This is a gouging management mechanism. You think you show initiative by working late every night. No appreciation! More like sucking the blood out of you! Do not bargain for the late nights, you will be lucky to leave early once a month without a dirty look! Get the job in the buildings where you see people leaving in herds at 4 or 5 o’clock. It is a fair 40 hour work week. We never sleep in this town like NY, I work with money so an overtime schedule of 3 days works for me as long as I get a longer weekend, everyone wants there money in their account in the morning, right? I have to work the stressful hours to make sure things run smoothly, its hard, but you negotiate your time, I HOPE any managers reading this understand to not overload workers or reward good workers with more work or more challenging work they cant figure out for themselves.

Traffic is Stressful in Chicago! A tourist downer! Listen to some fun CD’S!

Safety as you have read this year has been sketchy!! Sketchy areas all over Chicago. BUT I, as a thirty-something woman have no problem walking down dark alleys at night in decent to good areas and even downtown, no matter what, the downtown areas are monitored, we have a lot of technology, 24 hours even on holidays, someone is always around, CPD even on their bicycles or segways is not an uncommon site at 2 in the morning. I was in a very bad accident at 1 am once and there were at least 13 people around my car within a minute, you are not alone (Im ok :-) ) When caught at night walking through the alley by two Directors at work, I was barked at, I quickly smiled and outstretched my arm in three directions very swiftly pointing to three moving sensor video cameras that follow me every-time! Told my boys thank you for the safety tip but looks like everyone’s watching!! LOL

The people: This is a tough area to gauge. Chicago people are HONEST, blunt to a point…be it entertainment, politics, philosophy, sit down and grab a pint we can motor mouth ourselves all night long. Broadway, comedians, musicians, politicians…all come here to see how there “product” will go over in other areas of the country…be prepared for non bullsh*t opinions!! It can be brutal, but it is what protrudes us past the same NY minute atmosphere and bothersome aura in NY and the artificially sweet outwards and yet internal facades of LA. I have not been to either coasts because of this, the stories of horror I hear from there and the south. I cant stay in my bubble all the time though. Lastly, remember if you frequent many bars, clubs, or events, know that many people are not originally from here. Like others, they came to Chicago because something or someone warmed them up to stay here. Not too bad, I can really only think of one person who might not have had the best luck in this town. If you are sociable enough, you will be fine!! Check out the food, check out the fests, the theater, the music,…etc. You have to be everywhere to appreciate this towns quirks! Welcome!!

Q: Mixed Problems with math…?
Well these word problems ..i have ..i dont really understand them..im getting decimals for some reason..

1. Two trains leave New york for Florida at the same time. The first train averages 95 miles an hour and the second train averages 75 miles an hour. How many miles apart are they after 3.5 hours.?

2. Two Cars leave New york for chicago at 6: A.M. The first car average 41 miles an house and the second car averages 43 miles an hour. How many miles apart are that at 9:00 A.M.?

3. If a car averages 25 miles an hour, how many miles will the car travel in 3 hours, 36 minutes.

4. Find the length of a square if its area is 729..do i use the Lenght and width formula for this problem?

A: .As the two trains are running in the same direction, their effective speed or relative speed will be the difference of their respective speeds
Therefore relative speed
=95-75
=20 mph
Hence after 3.5 hrs, they will be (20*3.5) or 70 miles apart.
2.Relative speed between the two cars
=43-41
=2 mph
The time of travel
=9.00AM-6.00AM
=3 hrs
Therefore the two cars will be (3*2) or 6 miles apart
3.3hrs.36 ninutes=3 36/60 hrs=3 3/5=18/5 hrs
The car will travel 25*18/5 or 90 miles
4.The area of a sqare is x^2 when x is the measure of length of one of its side
hence if you wnt to find the side of a square from its area ,you have simply to square root its area
heresqrt 729=sqrt(9*9*9)=3*3*3=27
Therefore the measure of its length is 27 units

Q: math questions?
Help please?

1.) The perimiter of a rectangle is 350. Find the length if the width is 41.

2.)The sum of 2 consecutive numbers is 249. Find the first number.

3.) If a car averages 25 mils an hour, how many miles will the car travel in 3 hours, 36 minutes?

4,) Two cars leave New York for chicago at 6:00 A.m. The 1st Car averages 41 miles an hour and the 2nd car averages 43 miles an hour. How many miles apart are they at 9:00 a.m.

A: 1) 134
2) 124 and 125
3) 90
4) 6 miles apart

Q: 2007: Mazda3, Honda Civic/SI, or Toyota Matrix?
Hello guys, I’m planning to buy a new first car on late April. After some research I’ve narrowed it down to three economy cars: Mazda3, Civic or Matrix. Basically, I need a car that is under $20K, fuel efficient but strong engine that will last and relatively safe car. I initially chose the Matrix but it is essentially a Corolla engine with a different body. Can anyone make a suggestion? Thanks
I forgot to add, I live in Chicago, IL and I encounter city driving and drive mostly in the North.

A: The Matrix is a good car, you might save more buying a Vibe since it is a Matrix built by Toyota for Pontiac and Pontiac probably has more discounts. As far as the Civic goes, it is probably the most reliable of the three and you cannot go wrong with Honda! The three is my personal favorite for a few reasons. If you are looking for the s model it is a great engine, and has a timing chain so it’s first tune up is not until 105k miles like the civic. Either the civic or the 3 are great choices but i found the three to have a more quiet ride.Definatley the 3s has a much better stereo. The extra .5 litres will help your fuel economy in city driving. Too small of an engine means that you have to over compensate in acceleration which blows the gas mileage. Bigger engine the less you have to push the engine in traffic. Less push means lower rpms which equates to better fuel economy. The three is the one you are going to get the best deal on. As far as fun to drive I think you will find that in the 3s! The SI is fun but not under 20k! For the same price as a SI you can get os s grand touring with bose leather and moonroof! For the price of the Civic SI just spend another 1k and get a speed3 that car is AMAZING! I hope this helps

A: NIETHER. Get a Saturn Aura. It costs around 18,000, has a standard 225 HP V6 that gets comparable feul economy to Japanese 4 cylinders, scored top marks in reliability by consumers and professionals, my dads SL2 is 15 years old and still runs like new, has steel body panels instead of plastic, and is possibly the biggest headturner and best looking new car. I just wrote a huge answer but my computer froze so i’ll have to write it all again. for now let these reviews do the talking http://www.edmunds.com/new/2007/saturn/aura/100715082/ratings_consumer.html

Q: Translate the following sentence into Japanese?
About how long does (it) take from Chicago to New York if (one) goes (there) by car?

A: The guy above me wasn’t really specific enough. The proper way is:

シカゴからニューヨークまで車(くるま)でいくと、どのくら
い時間(じかん)
がかかりますか?

Good luck!

Q: Where do “foodies” shop for groceries in Chicago north side?
My daughter is new in Chitown; loves to cook. Says every grocery option she has explored is poor quality, poor selection. To quote: “Even the Whole Foods Market is a big step down from a standard Safeway in Denver.” Where can she find good quality and good selection without a car from Ravenswood neighborhood?

A: I’m not sure if she’s tried Treasure Island chain of grocery stores, but they seem to have the higher end food products. She could also try out the Fox and Obel store, but it’s downtown and from the Ravenswood neighborhood, she’s going to have quite a public transportation hike. I hope this helps.

Q: What engines can fit a 1999 Dodge intrepid?
I have a 1999 Dodge intrepid engine that doesnt work and i want to replace it. What other engines would be best to replace it with? And if you guys live in chicago where can i go to get my old engine pulled and my new engine put into the car?

A: Put the same kind of motor that came out of it back in it, if you put another motor in it and pay someone else to do it…….you will be paying much much more than the car is worth in labor and parts…….Good luck

Q: Afraid to move to Chicago! Is it as unsafe as I think?
My husband and I are relocating to Chicago for his new job. I’m from a small farm town where nothing criminal EVER happens. I could leave a stack of cash in my car with the doors unlocked and it wouldn’t be bothered. I keep reading about muggings and attacks and robberies. I’m scared to death something like that will happen to me. I’m a young, fairly good-looking white female. I feel like a wid-open target for some thug to rob or rape. We will probably be moving to the Wrigleyville/Lincoln Park/Ravenswood area. Somewhere north. However, the apartment buildings we’ve looked at have these huge courtyards and street parking. People could be lurking anywhere at night. Is there anyone who can ease my worries? Or am I just being paranoid and watching too much tv?

A: that area around wrigleyville is populated by a large gay community. I wouldn’t be too worried.

Q: Need Tips – road trip from Chicago to Orlando.?
The boyfriend and I are driving from Chicago to Orlando. I wanted to stop in New Orleans, Georgia, and possibly Six Flags if we run into one (we have season passes). Are there any places worth checking out on the way there, or the way back?

Any tips on a car emergency kit? He’s had the fluids checked, there are jumper cables, that stuff to fix a flat tire, possibly a spare tire, and a first aid kit just in case. Are we forgetting anything?

A: there is a six flags outside of atlanta. going to new orleans is quite a bit out of the way.

Q: anybody from Chicago remember the record snowfall of January 1967?…I got out of there about 2 days before .?
They had so much snow they were putting it into open rail cars and shipping it south to let it melt along the way…It hit right after New years Eve of 1966

A: Yes I was really young but I remember it. We were pretty much snowed in. I remember streets just clogged with stalled cars and buses. But there was another significant snow fall in the city too, in 1978, and that begain on New Year’s Eve (ironic) and stayed steady right up to the election day in February. That’s the one that got Jane Byrne elected mayor when current mayor Michael Bilandic failed to get the streets cleared in time (except for certain parts of Bridgeport) and Byrne pounced on that as evidence of his inability to serve as mayor. She, of course, won.

Just to clarify for those who don’t know: the souce of this info came from Ray Haninia, who as anyone who lived in the area during the time of the late 1978/1979 snowstorm knows, was a very popular radio newscaster in the city.

Q: Question about replacing a 98′ Mazda 626 4 cylinder engine??
I have a 1998 Mazda 4 Cylinder engine. It is losing oil pressure, so instead of buying a new car, I would like to replace the engine. So my question to you is how much would a used low mileage Mazda 626 engine be?? Anyone know a good site or place close to Chicago IL to get them at?

A: www.Car-part.com. Better than ebay. They have a network of recyclers in every state and are pretty damn good as far as used engines go (bought 10 engines various makes and models for my customers). Of course use common sense and find a balance between price and mileage. Don’t go after the cheapest engine but don’t pay an arm and a leg either. You may even get lucky and find a recycler with engines that have only highway miles on them and would be in way better shape than anything you could find in Chicago (plus the freight). Any mechanic should be able to give a quick leakdown test and a visual inspection for oil sludge before accepting the engine. Figure realistically $450 – $1000 plus shipping. Some recyclers offer warranties on the engines and would even pay for labor in the event of engine failure. 15 – 25 labor time units @ $60 per unit = $900 – $1500 to install plus tax and small things like hose clamps, oil, coolant, etc. Good idea to change the radiator $160 at autozone oem style – no use in replacing the engine and using the same crusty radiator (unless previously replaced).

Q: Have any of you young Black guys ever been pulled over in Chicago for no apparent reason, not speeding etc.?
This happens a LOT out here in Roseland! Especially when there are 2 or more in a car, and especially if it is a new model car even in broadopen daylight!
Its not only about driving, it’s even about WALKING. I am not exaggerating, when my grandson comes home for school break he tries to get off of this block and as far away from here as he can, because when he walks down the street he is stopped and asked where he is going or coming from, and it is not even late at night. This is sureal to me because I have lived in this city for going on 62 years, and never saw this type of thing. It is true it is not unusal to hear gun fire or shots ring out, and I live across the street from a school. I would like to know what is going on, because no one is telling ANYTHING!

A: I’m white and it happened to me a lot, especially when I was young. It’s not always a racial issue.

Q: Have you ever taken a long-distance (driving) trip by yourself?
I am going to be driving from Richmond, Virginia to Minneapolis, Minnesota this summer (a total of around 18 hours) with a stopover in Chicago for a night (I’ll be staying at my aunt’s house). I usually fly (my dad lives in Minneapolis and I visit him often), but I just got a new car and decided to drive.
That’s about 13 hours + stops one day and 6 + stops the next day, and I’ve never been in the car that long by myself before.

If you’ve ever taken a trip this long alone, what did you do to keep yourself busy, and more importantly, alert? I have a ton of good music to listen to, and I was thinking of bringing along snacks, but I’m at a loss for other ideas.

A: I have driven from Richmond to New Jersey and back. That is about 6 hours each way. I listen to Books on Tape (or CD). For me, that really makes the drive go fast. Make sure you stop every few hours to stretch your legs and maybe get some coffee or a Coke. If you feel like you are getting sleepy open the window for some fresh air or take off your shoes. Do not drive at night.
