Q: Could anyone recommend a decent FM transmitter for mp3 player for car?
Could anyone recommend a decent FM transmitter for my mp3 player for a car? I live in the Chicago area and the one I am currently using doesn’t seem to have a strong signal and I get a lot of static. Just about every frequency has a broadcast so I get a lot of interference as well. I suppose if I had a halfway decent transmitter, it would probably work better.

A: I found the best thing since sliced bread…http://www.crutchfield.com/S-9oDEWuNVIo6/cgi-bin/prodview.asp?i=142FMMOD01

It’s not wireless so there’s no interference. Not to be confused with an FM transmitter. Basically it adds an AUX input to ANY radio. No searching for a clean channel.

It feeds your audio signal from a headphone jack ( or RCA cables) by FM modulation, directly into the antenna input on your radio bypassing the antenna when on, allowing the radio to work as normal when off. It comes with an On/Off switch.

This is the answer. Totally versatile.

Q: Do people really drive more if they have a hybrid?
Steve Chapman of the Chicago Tribune recently did a column on global warming, stating that cars are forced to be at least 35 mpg, people will drive MORE since its cheaper. Assuming this is true, what is the REAL solution to car pollution? Electric cars are good since the power plants pollute less than gasoline cars, and if the power plants use solar cells and windmills, then it would be great! But what other ideas are better in case people don’t agree with this? Note: I believe nuclear is unsafe. 100,000 years is freakin’ too long. Do people really drive more if they get better mileage?
Right Keyan, sorry. But 10,000 years is still too long. Eventually, we’ll start using up storage space faster than it becomes safe, just like how fossil fuels are used faster than the hundreds of millions of years they take to form.

A: I have a hybrid and it doesn’t change the amount of time I spend behind the wheel. I bought the car because I was already driving ALL the time and eating up lots of gas, so hopefully switching to the hybrid was a win/win for both me and the enviornment. Besides, it’s still cheaper (and better for the environment) for the car to sit in the garage, so I doubt if his logic is completely right on target.

Q: Will my car make it to Chicago and back?
I need to drive to Chicago this weekend, and money is tight. I would be driving from Minneapolis, so we’re talking about 800 miles, round trip. My car is a 97 Saturn SL1. It has an oil leak. I have to add a quart of oil about once every month or so. Otherwise, it’s in good shape.

Here’s a little insight into my usual driving habits: I can get to my jobs using city streets, so I usually drive speeds 45 mph or less. I drive on the interstates in the metro area about once per week, so my car is driven 60+ mph about once per week.

I’m wondering what people’s thoughts are about putting my car through this drive, or whether I should rent a car. It would certainly be cheaper to drive my own vehicle, since renting for the weekend is pretty pricey. It’d be $110 + cost of gas to rent, while I would only pay cost of gas to drive my own car.

I will be transporting a large object back from Chicago, so flying is not really an option.

What do you all think?

A: Just make sure all your fluids look good, tranny fluid is red, oil is full, etc….check your oil when you stop for gas and you should be ok. If your car hasnt given you alot of crap in the past chances are it wont now

Q: Do you need a car to get around Chicago?
I am taking my husband and baby with me to Chicago for a conference near the end of October. I was going to rent a car but saw that hotels there charge quite a bit for valet parking,, and there’s no free self-parking.. I will be staying at a hotel 2 to 3 miles from where the conference is (McCormick Place) so I will have to go back and forth there. And we also want to go see several sights in Chicago while there. Is there public transportation, like subways, buses, or taxis, that are easy to use and stroller friendly? Or should I just shell out the money and rent a car?

A: Unless you enjoy traffic hell. No, definitely use public transport. Although the L doesn’t serve McCormick Place, you can still get there by bus. But the L (and I’m talking about the CTA (Elevated Trains, like a Subway or metro but above ground) ) serves most of Chicago and is extremely easy to use. Chicago and NYC are the only cities with real public transportation systems (in the states)

Q: What can I use for my car doors’ hinges?
I’m in Chicago & it’s freezing!! I drive an old car & when I open some of the doors, the hinges make this noise.. Rust? I dunno & what should I do?

A: WD-40 is great for cleaning and de-rusting, and in particular for displacing water, but NOT for lubricating (hence the nickname WD-sticky).

Your car hinges are exposed to the weather, so they need a lubricant designed for that. White lithium grease would work and is also REALLY good for the door latch/catch and lots of stuff because it won’t stain clothing. But it’s hard to get a grease to properly penetrate into the interior of the hinge where it is needed.

But I digress. For a hinge, I recommend a chain lubricant (bicycle or motorcycle), because they are designed to stay in place and withstand the weather. Bicycle dry chain lubes are great because although they are thin liquid, the liquid solvent first penetrates into the mechanism, then evaporates (even in chicago cold) leaving a wax that lasts a long time and doesn’t collect dirt. Apply in 4-6 coats, but never enough to drip out the bottom. A second choice would be Permatex anti-seize, which lasts forever. But it has graphite and stains big-time and is hard even to get off your fingers..

If you own a GM car, they are notorious for hinges that wear out.

P.S. It’s been REALLY cold here in the highlands of SE Idaho too!

Try meg for lots of fixit tips, though this one is for house hinges.
Goofy sense of humor that is a riot.

Q: Can I use anyone’s car for the driving test.?
I want to use my friends car to take to the dmv for the test. Can I use her car? And also my permit is expired but I already am ready for the test so do I need a permit at all to take the driving test. Can anyone find me sources to these questions for Chicago. I’ve searched and went to the dmv website but can’t find answers to these questions. Thanks.

A: Not for any case I’ve seen before, but I’ve actually borrowed my friend’s car for a dyno test and drag-drift race. Winners get to become the triads’ leader, losers will pay with their life, so far, I’ve never lost before. I’m still a triad leader…

Q: where can i get a racing program appraised? it is from Hansen park stadium in chicago and is from 1947?
This racing program has name on it like lou scally, ray elliot, frank steuber, paul bettenhausen, and numerous others. It is a trifold 6 page program with time trial listings, elimination races, and printed prior to the 4th of july 1947. This stadium was used for midget car racing for only one season before moving to joliett. I need to sell it as I have recently become unemployable due to health.
Thi form is a trifold 6 page program that lists the drivers, such as ray elliot, paul bettenhausen, lou scally, frank steuber, along with a place for the owner to fill in the time trials time, list the match race entries, and acers who make the elimination races. I found this in my Dad’s stuff that I inherited after his death in 1988, and need to sell it now due my failing health and unemployability.I am located in San Antonio tx and would like to know how much I should ask for this piece of memorabilia. I hav pictures (scans) of it that i can e-mail, or can take it to someone near here.

Q: Resurrection Mary in Chicago?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMma3z4juUE
my brother’s friend who use to play for the Chicago Bears 2 seasons ago said he was driving around Chicago & got lost on the South Side. he went down archer road, & remembered the other players talking about Resurrection Mary & saying don’t go on archer road at night cause you will see her. i he didn’t believe them, & went down there, he swore he saw her & the scary thing is when he drove by her, his car got extremely cold. anyone from Chicago got a story about her, please tell, best story gets 5 stars

A: The strangest account of Mary was the one that occurred on the night of August 10, 1976. This event has remained so bizarre after all this time because on this occasion, Mary did not just appear as a passing spirit. It was on this night that she left evidence behind!

A driver was passing by the cemetery around 10:30 that night when he happened to see a girl standing on the other side of the gates. He said that when he saw her, she was wearing a white dress and grasping the iron bars of the gate. The driver was considerate enough to stop down the street at the Justice police station and alert them to the fact that someone had been accidentally locked in the cemetery at closing time. An officer responded to the call but when he arrived there was no one there. The graveyard was dark and deserted and there was no sign of any girl.

But his inspection of the gates, where the girl had been seen standing, did reveal something. The revelation chilled him to the bone! He found that two of the bars in the gate had been pulled apart and bent at sharp angles. To make things worse, at the points on the green-colored bronze where they had been pried apart were blackened scorch marks. Within these marks was what looked to be skin texture and handprints that had been seared into the metal with incredible heat.

The marks of the small hands made big news and curiosity-seekers came from all over the area to see them. In an effort to discourage the crowds, cemetery officials attempted to remove the marks with a blowtorch, making them look even worse. Finally, they cut the bars off and installed a wire fence until the two bars could be straightened or replaced.

Q: What kind of mountain bike should I be looking for?
I had always liked riding bikes…but then I got a car and grew out of my bike; I never got a new one. I want a bike again to ride on trails and take with me to college (in Chicago). I will most likely be buying used as my budget is $200. I’m also not sure what size bike i should be looking for…I am 6ft 2in and weigh 160lbs. Any help is appreciated.

A: At that height look into 19-21 in frame depending on your inseam. With a 200$ budget you will be pushing it on what you can get but considering that larger frames move slower you may get a good deal. For what you described look into a nice hard tail. Of the big box brands: Cannondale, Trek, Gary Fisher, or Specialized.
College campuses are notorious for bike thefts. If you can leave it in your dorm good. If not anything that can come off ex: seat, wheels will be gone.

Good luck

Q: Where are safe, fun places to live in Chicago? How much will I spend on transportation?
I am moving to Chicago with my roommate in aug., we are both 23. We might take one car but mainly use public transportation. We will both be working downtown but have been looking at wicker park and lincoln park to live. We can spend about 1000-1800 on a 2 bedroom. We are concerned about safety and being around people are age. ALso, I have no idea how much I will have to spend on public transportation in a month. Thanks for any help!!

A: Stay in Lincoln Park that is the best spot for yuppies. If you cant find that pad in LP stay in Lakeview. Itll be mad peeps your age in those places. You’ll have fun its like extended college over in those areas. You can get a monthly pass thatll get you on the public trans.

Q: what is the best place in Chicago for me?
I’m an 18 year old artist, born and raised in a small town in West Virginia. I’ll be moving to Chicago early next year (2010). I have read a lot of different threads, but still haven’t been able to choose a definite place that I want to move. I am wanting to find a studio apartment for around 600/month, and I’ll be working at a retail store to pay the bills, while also selling artwork. I am mainly choosing between Wickerpark/Bucktown (because of its artsy sort of vibe, but I have also heard that it is dying down into a more yuppie neighborhood. Clarify that if you can.), Lincoln Park (because it’s close to the beaches and downtown area, which I think would be nice), and Lincoln Square (for it’s affordibility) I’m basically open to anywhere safe, with a lot to do. I’ll be living without a car, biking and using public transportation. My reasons for moving are mainly to have more opportunities, a more enjoyable place to live, and to live the “city life”. Well that’s about it, tell me which neighborhood you think would be best for me.

A: Check this site: http://www.city-data.com/forum/chicago/

I use it frequently for any questions AND the answers are from people who actually lived in and experienced Chicago. Real answers. No answers from suburbanites who “think” they know what they’re talking about.

Oh yea, just remember, Chicago is expensive in almost every inner city neighborhood. If I were you I would just live in the southwest suburbs with transportation to the Loop if I were a striving artist. No need to be MORE broke just to have that city life or that Chicago zip code. Take it slow and see what happens.

Also, have you given NY City a try? I know Chicago is a great city for artists/musicians/actors but it seems NY has more outlets for artists like yourself. Just my opinion. Good luck.

P.S. :
I want to be a playwright so maybe one day I’ll see your art work in a museum while my play or musical is on Broadway!

Q: Has ne body shipped thier car from Hawaii to Chicago?

A: THE BEST WAY TO CHECK THE COSTS FIRST CALL YOUR AIRLINES FREIGHT DEPARTMENT ASK THEM FOR A QUOTE FOR A PRICE.ALSO CALL A DEALER ASK THEM WHO THERE CAR HAULERS ARE ,THEY WILL TELL YOU THEN YOU CALL THEM AND ASK FOR A QUOTE THEY WILL TELL YOU.ANOTHER WAY IS BY WATER IN CONTAINERS.tHEY CAN SHIP TO la THEN HAVE CAR HAULING COMPANY BRING YOUR CAR TO cHICAGO,MOST JAPANEESE AUTO MAKERS DO THIS AND USUALLY YOU HAVE IT SHIPPED TO cHICAGO FOR AROUND 6OO DOLLARS. FOR THE WHOLE TRIP FROM HAWEAII.

Q: Should I relocate to Chicago — need advice. Family says “no.”?
Well the only time I have ever lived away from home was when I went away to college and then I came back home after it was over. I’ve done research, online only, and think I want to relocate from NJ to Chicago, IL. There’s no places near here with good jobs, and I want to be out on my own. I have never been there before and can’t afford to go and “just check it out.” I’m thinking of selling my car and getting the money from it and using it to find a place in Chicago for a few months and hopefully a job within that time frame. my family is saying I won’t be able to live that far away and make it on my own. They are saying not to even think about moving that far and it’s kinda scaring me. I think I could do it. I’m in my late 20s, no kids, not married yet. I could get between $5,000-$6,000 for my car. I absolutely hate driving and in Chicago I’ve been told and read several times you don’t need a car. what do you all think about this? I need advice from people outside the situation. TY!
** what’s a “good paying job?” $40,000-$50,000?
** I never said I couldn’t get a job in Philly or Newark, contrary to popular belief you NEED a car to live in most non violent areas. I have lived in this area all my life. I do not want to drive where ever I move to. I have done research and Chicago is one of those cities you don’t absolutely need a car to live in. I’m still doing research – nothing is final yet.
** I said $40,000 – $50,000 because that is how much the field I work in pays. I didn’t just pull that number out the sky, LOL. I cannot get to those jobs in those areas, as I said I’m not good at driving and don’t want to rely on driving.

A: You could live very well without a car, I should know, I have no car. I haven’t had a license for 20 years. This adds a lot of free cash you your pocketbook!! If you were to have a car in my building, it would be 150 for the parking space alone! Your salary range is fine, you could live in a small condo downtown for that and be able to get anywhere you want to go. Sign up to Yahoo Personals and you will have people to show you around, too. We have people here from all over the world, you will fit right in.

Your age is a good time to be away from your family, when your parents get older they will demand more of your time, have fun now.

Q: Help with getting aroung Chicago?
The wife and I are going to Chicago this labor day weekend, tomorrow Friday through Monday. We’ll be staying in Itasca. Neither of us know the area don’t know how to get anywhere. Should we drive to a local light rail/subway terminal and park and take the rail system or should we drive around town? I’m interested in knowing the amount of time each would take and the complexity and difficulties of each decision. What rail station would we use and is there parking to leave the car for a day and pick it up to drive back to hotel each day?

Major Points we plan to see for the weekend:
Museum of Science and Industry
Millenium Park
Chicago River Tour
Navy Pier
Sears Skydeck
Some major art place

Thanks for any help you can provide!
Also how much walking are we talking about to get from rail stations to the places I listed? A couple blocks or a mile?

A: Start at the Metra train station in Itasca. Trains downtown will connect with all the spots you mentioned. There will not be an agent on duty but you can buy tickets on the train.
A Chicago Tribune area map will cost you about $8 and you may be able to find one at your local Barnes and Nobel or Borders. It has a very detailed Chicago area map and an excellent downtown map. It is well worth the trouble.
The Metra trip will take about 45 minutes and cost $3-4. Here are their links… http://www.metrarail.com/Sched/md_w/itasca.shtml
http://www.metrarail.com/Sched/md_w/mdw_wki.shtml
The Museum of Science and Industry is about a 30 minute bus ride from the station. Service is not bad, but consider popping for a cab.
The Sears Towers is a nice walk from the station.
The bus to Navy Pier will pass near the Art Institute, Millennium Park, Water Tower, the river boats, and numerous historical sites.

Q: Do the people of Chicago know something the rest of the country should?
I just returned from a business trip in Chicago. Downtown, rush hour on the Jack Ryan/Chicago prkw, I saw one bumper sticker for Obama. I asked about this to quite a few very diverse group of people (medical convention trade show) and the consensus I got from all but one person is that Obama is not liked. The word hate was used quite a bit. One person told me that “the only car that would have one is Oprah’s” and though I do not agree with the reason “his house has 24 hr guard to prevent vandals, not racist, I am told, but those who “know” him and “his commie friends”. This is what I was told and as much as I do not want him elected I found this surprising. No yard signs, billboards, etc.
What in your opinion does this say about Obama? Why has the media not reported this? (they found “dirt” on Palin pretty quick)
Are you as surprised as I was by this information?
No read the question and I asked this question all over resturants, gas stations etc. not to mention the hotel over 500 people just at the convention. And their were many dems that will not vote for him from Chicago. again my observations over 5 days.
Planet: I understand that, Kalamazoo 2 weeks ago there are nothing but Obama signs up around the city, 5 to 10 miles out McCain.
But this still does not give substance to your reasoning, what I saw and heard is beyond people “keeping mum”. And doctors should be afraid of universal health care, many of the Canadian doctors and patients I speak with have nothing positive to say about it and they have had it long enough to know. Many Canadian Health personal practice in the US because of the flaws in the Canadian system, this from them.
“the people I know who live here”
Exactly, obviously you have only 3 conservative friends. I knew no one.
And your poll is from the state I only can speak on the drive from Ann Arbor and the time I was in and around Chicago. I saw more Obama support in Mich. and Ind. than in Ill.

A: I am from Illinois and he promised when he ran for state senate he had no intentions on running for president. He is a liar.
