Q: Where does the baby sit in a taxi?
In big cities, such as New York or Chicago, where you’re more likely to use a taxi, what is the law concerning children in car seats? Are you required to bring a car seat or do you just hold them?

A: good question
I had this situation – stroller was put into the trunk and I held the baby – the cabby didn’t say anything so I assume it was alright to do.

I would think that if he would get a ticket for that – that he wouldn’t allow it…

I really am not 100% on this though.. maybe it’s the parents responsibility so if the police pulled him over – we would be the ones to get a ticket for not having them in the car seat. But It wasn’t a problem for us…

Wether it’s the law or not… for saftey’s sake – You should wear a seatbelt – but Do Not strap it around your baby with you – if you were to stop short – your pressure (from your body weight) against the baby into the seatbelt could kill it. Instead if you plan to do alot of cab riding – buy a harness (like cloth baby carrier that you wear in front of you) for the baby to sit in. This way you are belted in and the baby is belted to YOU. You won’t crush the baby with your body weight – like you could if the baby was in your seat belt with you.

Q: Older car, pricey repairs vs. newer car, cheaper repairs?
I was involved in a car accident recently (not my fault), where the insurance decided it was cheaper just to total my car (2002 Volvo S60 T5).

I have yet to hear the actual value I’ll be receiving for the total, but it will probably be between $10-13,000.

I was thinking of using that money to get a 2004 Honda Accord (used), because I’ve had good experiences with Accords in the past and have found the repairs to be much cheaper (my Volvo was always in the shop and the repairs were ridiculous (I’m a college student)).

My father was planning on upgrading his current car (a 2001 Volvo S80 T6) because it is now out of warranty (mileage is about ~80k). My mom’s idea was to take his car and use the money I receive for my totaled car for any future repairs I run into with his Volvo.

My question is: which do you feel is the better choice? I honestly don’t know which option makes more sense.

(I do a lot of city driving in Chicago, if that makes any sort of difference).

A: So if you take your Mom’s idea, you end up with a free car that might need repairs at some point? I’d take the free car, unless it has a bad history. If you Dad has had a ton of problems, then I might not. But if it has been good for him, I’d take it without a doubt. Hold onto that insurance money, put it into a high yeild account and earn some interest, and then as your Mom says, pay for repairs if needed.

Q: PLEASE READ!i’ve never been this upset … i wrecked her car and they dont know yet … i want to die, help :( ?
Okay a few weeks ago I had turned 15 and i got my drivers permit. My dad had said before that I’m a better driver then him because i had been driving in his lap since I was a little kid. And Ive been driving with my parents in the car since I was around 13 and never got in a wreck or anything at all.

Anyway my grandma had come about two days ago and had left her car here because she was going out of town with a friend to a wedding.

Anyway I get home a bit earlier then my parents because i have a free period at the end of the day. So I walk home (its about 3 blocks). Today I really needed to go to the store to buy some things because Friday is prom. So I thought it would be ok if i just slipped out and got it and then came back real quick. I found my grandmas keys and i had took her car (a new Buick, really expensive). Everything was going great i even stopped by a friends house. On the way home though I was at a intersection and in the right lane there was a an 18 wheeler turning right so i didnt see that there was a pickup in the left lane!

i had pulled out and the truck had SLAMMED the breaks. So it slided to a stop and hit the back door and dented it HORRIBLE. i fishtailed and then i had sat in the middle of the intersection and i had got out of the car. but then the pickup driver had just kept driving, didnt even stop to see if i was OK!!!

anyway i wanted to something but god im so ashamed idk what to do. the back door is almost caved in! i just drove home no one even cared b/c i live in chicago and this happens every day. but the entire back of the car is just destroyed almost. my neck REALLY hurts bad and i have a headache but the car matters more right now.

i hate myself! i wish i had been killed. there are tears all over the keyboard, i just dont know what do and my parents wont be home until 7:30 or so (its 6:40 here). sorry but im posting this in a busy section (p and s) because i need answers NOW. can i take the car somewhere to get fixed real quick before my parents see it?? how much will it cost? i have money and i can pay for all of it.

:(
IF YOU ARE TOO LAZY TO READ THE WHOLE QUESTION PLEASE READ THIS SUMMERY!!!!!!

**** i am only 15 and i took my grandmas expensive car out and wrecked it. i need to fix it before my parents get home so they dont find out. they trust me so much with cars :(

A: going to a fuggen mechanic you idiot

Q: What is a good 1995 or newer car for under $5000, for a first vehicle?
I’m looking for all suggestions. I do NOT want it to be older than 1995, please. And ideas on which cars you think would be under 5000 dollars.

Looking for answers that include reliably, will it last for a while, even if it’s already got 100,000 miles on it, etc…

Also, I’m a pretty good driver, so there is no need to base it on whether i’ll be getting in accidents. I’ve been driving my one of my parents vehicles, a 2007 Nissan Maxima, in CHICAGO, and I haven’t harmed it at all, so yeah, I can drive pretty good, lol

I’m trying to buy it all by myself, without any help from anyone, because I want it to me my car, that I bought with my money, so I will take even better care of it, that’s why I’ve set my budget at just $5 K

I’m open to cars, trucks, SUV’s… PLEASE, no vans.

Just give me some ideas, based on reliability, how long it will last, as I said earlier. :)

Also, I plan to only have this car for 2-3 years at the MOST, so it will definitely NOT be a permanent car

Thank you

A: Choose the brand carefully…. At a young age you want a car that is cheap to run and reliable. Toyota’s and European cars are great.
Alot of the 1995+ range under 5k are all newish, but they are s h i t ish. Definitely Hyundai’s, they are exceptionally bad. always burning oil and blowing head gaskets…. Hyundai Tiburon’s are awesome but they are way out of your price range and probably don’t last that long either…. Toyota’s are the best… Alot of older cars have a good street reputation too…. dont forget that…

Q: Can illegal immigrant get local flight ticket?
My friend and I are planning to go new york from chicago. Problem is he’s status is illegal…
Is there any way to get into plane and go to newyork safely?? or does he have no option but take someone’s car or train??

A: he will need a government picture id to travel any way…
now a days in bus, in car, in train they are asking for id and show of prove of legal residency or citizen

last time i went to Las Vegas i went on the plane and all of a sudden a guy from border patrol asked me for my prove of citizenship =0S

mmmmm …….. i wouldnt risk it if he doesnt have a government id…. a real one because now they even scan them to see if they are valid ids

Q: In the area of Dallas and North Dallas, are there any areas that have a large number of bars in a small area?
I am wondering if there is an specific area that has a close cluster of bars, restaurants, lounges, clubs, and the such. An area similar to Sunset Blvd in Los Angeles, or Bourbon Street in New Orleans, Rush Street in Chicago, where once you park your car, you can walk to a number of locations.

A: Addison has a lot of bars that are bar/restaurants.

Q: Why do I say certain words like I’m from New York?
I say certain words like for, four, before, order, here, car, ER and anything that ends in -er like I’m from New York. I’ve never lived there and never been there. I was born and raised in Chicago, IL and still live there. Why do I talk like that? Just curious because I was talking to my friend from Utah on the phone and she said I talk funny. :) I mean no offense to any New Yorkers.

A: Sometimes it can be the alignment of your teeth to your tongue. Other than that it can just be how you started pronouncing words that ended in “er” and you have just carried it on ever since :P If you watch a lot of television shows or movies with people who talk like this that could be why. Also if you have ever visited New York you could have picked up the accent a tiny bit.

Q: UK citizens buying a car, insurance, driving in the USA?
Hi, My fiance and I are both UK citizens and in June/ July of 2010 we’d like to drive from New York to Chicago then do route 66 to Los Angeles.

He’ll be 23, I’ll be 21.

We’ll both have full UK drivers licenses (his for 5 years, mine for 2 or 3).

***My First Question is:Will it be necessary to obtain the International Drivers permit or not?

We’d like to buy a used pick up truck, do the trip, then sell it off.

***How would we go about this, not being US citizens, not having an address etc?

Obviously it can be done, just dont really know how!!

***Also, what kind of insurance would we need to take out? how much would it cost? and which companies could provide it?

Thanks in advance

A: please try this
help!

Q: Moving from Dallas to Chicago..have I missed anything?
I plan to move from Dallas to Chicago next month. I was laid off from my job, now collecting UIB. I have visited on several occassions but do not have any friends nor relatives up there. I have researched neighborhoods, began looking for new employment online. I am planning a pre-move trip at the end of the month. My question is this: I do not have a college degree, but I do have a Class A CDL (w/ HAZMAT) and I have an extensive background in customer service, hotels, call centers. Will I be able to find employment say within about a month or so. I am planning to stay at either the YMCA or one of those Extended Stay America hotels until I find a job, and then can find an apartment. Also, I am thinking about selling my car…is this a good idea? Is public transportation really that dependable? So, any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated. I have always wanted to move to Chicago..this is the last month on my lease, I have no job..ready or not Chicago here I come!!

A: When you live in the city, owning and parking a car IS a major hassle unless you rent garage or parking space (more $). Sell your car: buses and the “el” are pretty reliable. When you’re ready for an apartment, check listings in free local papers like the Redeye, postings in Loop area colleges and neighborhood businesses, and local online roommate services.

As for permanent employment, I can’t guarantee you’ll find something within a couple of months, but your skills background seems diverse enough to get a good job. With your CDL and people skills, you might try the tour bus companies. Not only could you drive, but you could become a tour guide, too. Get a good map of the city and start learning the street and building numbering systems. The drawback is that summer is high season, and many of those positions are seasonal. Go to local hotels, by all means, and to the colleges, too. You might find a position in human resources, student services, etc. City Colleges of Chicago, Columbia College, Roosevelt University, De Paul, UIC, and University of Chicago are just a few, and you would get reduced tuition if you decide to take classes yourself. Retail stores will be hiring holiday employees come November.

Keep trying–you’ll succeed! It helps to have a support group and make friends: join a church/temple/mosque, a volunteer group, Chicago Park District program, etc. Use your computer to network. Give yourself a small reward for your hard effort ever so often.

Good luck!

Q: What cities have good transportation for tourist? (or a tourist designated area)?
I’m looking for a new vation city where I don’t have to rent a car. The cities I’ve been to are…

New York (Great public transporation – subway system is like no other – no car nessecary)

Las Vegas (The tourist area is the strip and downtown Vegas – easy to get back and forth on the bus – no car nessecary)

New Orlean (The tourist area is the french quarters – get a hotel nearby and you’ll need no car)

Los Angeles (To much urban sprawl YOU NEED A CAR)

So I’m looking for a NEW city to visit where I can either get a hotel near the attractions or one that has a good system of public transportation so I can easily catch a bus or walk.

I’m considering Chicago, Miami, and Philidelphia but I don’t know what area is designated for tourist and I don’t know if their public transporation is effective.

If you know about these cities share some info with me.

And if you know a different city with good transpo. please share too.

A: Washington DC is wonderful. I’ve lived here almost 5 years and I still haven’t seen everything there is to see. I also didn’t have a car my first 3 years and got along just fine. The metro system is very easy to use and goes pretty much everywhere you want it to. You can take it to all the national monuments and the museums that are affiliated with the Smithsonian. It is a short walk from the metro to the National Mall and the Tidal Basin where the cherry blossoms bloom. The cherry blossoms are blooming in about a week. There is great dining and shopping in Georgetown (accessible by walking or bus from the metro) and the Wizards and Capitols (bball and hockey) play at the Verizon center right on the metro line as well. The metro website is www.wmata.com so you can look it up further.

Q: Traveling to Chicago?
I’m planning on traveling to Chicago and looking for areas to stay at. Does anybody know about Deerfield, Illinois? how long is it from like downtown Chicago and such. Also how is the transportation in Chicago? Is it anything like NYC. In NY most hotels have a bus route from New Jersey that will take you to the city, i’m wondering if its same in Chicago or do i have to drive with my own car to downtown? thanks

A: DON’T TAKE A CAR! If you do, park in a parking garage and just walk wherever you go. You’ll be able to get the full effact that way…and traffic sucks. Wear comfy shoes. Go to the Shed Aquarium for sure. It’s inredible. The Art Institue is amazing. I heard Navy Pier has fireworks on Wed. and Sat…I think @ 10p.m. Also eat a hot dog or two and just enjoy the city. Bring lots of film because there are so many things to see. The Virgin Records store is neat. I got my favorite shirt from there. I’m from Florida and I went in September. I automatically fell in love. It’s def. a trip worth taking. Have a blast!

Q: Anybody selling a car or no someone selling a car for no more than 1,500 in the Joliet Area or Chicago area?
Looking for something that runs and doesn’t need much a lot of major work. between a 96-2000 or newer if possible. iwilliams84@yahoo.com oh no trucks and station wagons
Well, when I typed the question i had to choose what type of question it was and one of the options was cars and Transportatiton>buy and selling. Well, if it did not want me to search a community full of people on the internet for something as simple as a used car it should have said that. Thanks anyway internet police!

A: This post is a community violation – this is for questions and answers, not car wanted ads. Check craigslist, cars.com, autotrader.com, and the Chicago papers.

Q: Scary car malfunction stories?
Anybody racing or driving, have something go wrong with the car that caused you to crap in your pants, and try not to crash?I got a 5.0 with a pro/street aod/2500 stall converter and the regular mods for a mustang that caused the water pump/timing chain cover to brake across the bolt flanges that made antifreeze come out at a very high rate and coat the the rear tires making them very slick and fish tailed 3 times avoiding the 4ft cement wall and my buddies car before i got control of it in the underground streets of downtown chicago where the new batman movie was shot. That was unexpected.woowee!!
Dont mind the ford section,we all share the road.

A: I have three quick stories.

1) I had a spark plug wire get caught up in the accelerator linkage of a 75 Nova SS, causing my gas pedal to jam up just before a red light. Heck, I was doing a brake stand just after I nearly rear ended someone. Darn Accel pre-fab wire kit with extra long spark plug wires! Thank goodness that I was able to kill the ignition in time.

2) Someone spiked my brake fluid in my ‘78 Z28 with engine oil and one day I lost my brakes while reversing out of the school’s parking lot and almost hit a parked car before I knew what the heck happened. I know the e-brake was the fail safe, but it just happened so fast and it there wasn’t really any damage asides from a hefty $$ brake system overhaul. The scariest part was losing the brakes, I could have left the parking lot before the brake failure and got into a whole lot of trouble.

3) Girls and stupidity caused the scariest one. My friend egged me on to doing a burn out around a corner, so I hammered the gas while slamming the car in first gear. Next thing I know is that I heard this awful noise, the car dropping, and a 50 series rear wheel shooting off in the girls direction. I actually jumped out of the car and chased the wheel in order to kick it off course before it ran over the girls. All my wheel studs snapped off and my lower quarter panel thrashed because I used a wheel spacer to even out the wide tires to exactly match the quarter panel wheel lips. Seems that GM didn’t weld the leaf spring plates to exact measurements, hence a slight offset that was noticeable with wide tires on the back. My poor 78 Z28 was never the same after with the crunched up quarter panel. Everyday, I saw the aftermath and I wanted to kick my own butt.

Other than that, it’s the usual winter horror stories about sliding out of control. Oh, I hydroplaned once and I just about crapped my pants. Also, I topped out a 88 5.0 and nearly lost control around a bend in the highway.

Needless to say, I drive with extreme care and control nowadays. My crazy days are truly behind me. I haven’t had a sports car in years, I took away my privilege as I still don’t trust myself. Mishaps do happen, fortunately I haven’t even had even a flat tire for a long time. :)

–Oh, my bad… I only had one Ford story. I just realized the topic was designated under “Ford”.

Q: Would mass transit prevent drunk driving?
I think it would. Why is America so backwards?

I didn’t like the liberal city I went to college at, but at least they had $3 cabs you could get a ride home in and buses that would take you anywhere, so you wouldn’t need a car all the time.

Canada’s mass transit is even better. Take a bus to the train station, then take a train into Toronto. The highways into that city are definitely a hell of a lot better to drive on than in America, especially Atlanta, Chicago and New York.

A: Few states in America have DUI fatality reates as low as New York. This is in part attributable to the heavy use of mass transit services there. Fewer drivers means fewer drunk drivers. But those who do drive face a LOT of traffic.

Meanwhile, counties along the West coast tend to have very low DUI fatality rates as well. Here, mass transit is not as well established as back East. Hence there is much more traffic. Frankly it is difficult most of the time along the West coast to drive fast enough to kill someone.

Fatalities aside, there are far more DUI arrests in these same West coast counties than in New York counties.

So when you look at both arrest and fatality statistics for these two areas, the clear advantage goes to a sophisticated mass transit system. It appears there is truly less drunk driving where the mass transit is.
